The practice of Walking is much more than exercise. Since the physical component is more or less pronounced, the activity of walking must involve the whole learning component, knowledge of the territories covered, contacts with local populations and other walkers, regional development and personal spirituality.

Joining a Walking Festival to a unique artistic treasure as it exists in Alto Alentejo is a unique experience.
Necessary elements are the Conferences of the Festival, where one can learn and know more about Art as an indispensable element of cultural affirmation in the privileged territory of Aleto Alentejo.

How to participate
These conferences do not have prior registration. Just show up at the places indicated at the scheduled time.
Activities start 15 minutes after the time announced.

The City of Ammaia is undoubtedly the most important vestige of the Roman Period in the northern Alentejo region. Located in the Natural Park of Serra de São Mamede, in São Salvador de Aramenha, in the municipality of Marvão, its central area consists of Quinta do Deão and Tapada da Aramenha, with an area of ??approximately 25 ha. Although its ruins were classified as National Monument in 1949, they were dug up until the end of 1994. From this date and with the appearance of the Ammaia City Foundation, every effort has been made to study and preserve what remains of this important city. Ammaia was elevated to Civitas around the year 44/45 d.C. having obtained the status of Mvnicipivm still during the century. I d.C., however we only have data about the same in the reign of Lúcio Vero, in the year 166 AD.

The City of Ammaia was a place of intense life, with all the spaces and times of a city of its time. Discovering this past has been a meticulous task of building the puzzle of history. Traces of two millennia ago were stolen, destroyed and reused by generations following the time of greatness of the city.

Now let's take a look at what the Art of Roman Sculpture in the City of Ammaia was, because they carved such pieces, what symbols they had, where they went, what new uses they had and, above all, how it has been the adventure of discovering them and interpreting them.

Beauty is the most subjective of the arts. It is intrinsic in the work, whether of nature or molded by human hands, but it is also necessary that the art receiver feels motivated by appreciation. There is a perfect, and sometimes imperfect, balance between the work, the artist and who appreciates it. This is called Art. This can be called Life.

Maria Leal da Costa, Portuguese artist, born in Évora, studied at the Superior School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, lives and works in Alentejo, in Marvão. Its sculptures in stone, iron and bronze are characterized by a contemporary and multifaceted approach, of great tranquility and beauty. Exhibits since 1994, is represented in several public and private collections, both in Portugal and abroad.

Visiting the Sculpture Park of Maria Leal da Costa, in the middle of the Serra de São Mamede, in Alto Alentejo, is to know the best food for soul and mind. Dare you !
